Golden Odds Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 2026
Golden Odds is a photo-planning app made by Heaton.Photography ("we," "us"). This policy covers the app. Our website has its own privacy policy. In short: there are no accounts, no ads and no tracking, and almost everything stays on your phone.
What stays on your phone
- Saved spots, settings, spot notes, shot lists and parking locations.
- Photos you add to the shot journal or spot notes. The app reads their location and capture time on the phone; photos are never uploaded.
- Your precise location, when you allow it (to add your current spot, rank nearby spots, open the sky view, or save parking).
- Cached forecasts and the app's record of its own predictions.
- Camera and motion sensors (sky view): used live on the phone to draw sky paths over the camera view. Nothing is recorded or sent.
- Calendar: only used to add the events you choose (for example a Milky Way night). The app doesn't read your calendar.
Deleting the app deletes all of this. Backups you export are files you control.
What the app sends, and why
- Coordinates for forecasts and planning data. To get weather, terrain, sky darkness, tides, smoke and satellite data, the app sends a spot's coordinates (rounded to about 1 km, or coarser) to our server at heaton.photography, which fetches the data from the providers below. These requests aren't linked to you or your device, and we don't keep a history of them beyond standard short-lived server logs, which include IP addresses.
- Requests sent directly from the phone: US weather alerts from the National Weather Service (with the spot's coordinates) and space weather from NOAA (no location).
- Ratings and condition reports you choose to send. "How was it?" ratings and trail/road reports are sent without your name or device ID, with coordinates rounded (about 10 km for ratings, about 1 km for reports). They're stored to tune the forecasts and shown to other users nearby.
- Purchases. Subscriptions are processed by Apple or Google. RevenueCat manages subscription status using an anonymous app ID and your purchase receipts; it doesn't receive your name or email from us.
- Crash reports. If the app crashes, a report with the device model, OS version and the error (no location, photos or saved spots) may be sent to Sentry so we can fix it.
Services involved
Vercel (hosts our server), Cloudinary (stores anonymous ratings and reports), RevenueCat (subscriptions), Sentry (crash reports), Apple and Google (app stores, maps and notifications). Data providers our server queries: MET Norway, NOAA, the US National Weather Service, Terrain Tiles on AWS, NASA GIBS, AirNow and CelesTrak. Each has its own privacy policy.
What we don't do
- No accounts, sign-ups or email collection in the app.
- No advertising, ad IDs or tracking across other apps and websites.
- We don't sell or rent any information.
Notifications
Alerts, reminders and countdowns are scheduled on your phone. No push token or notification data is sent to us.
Your choices
- Location, photos, camera, motion and notifications are each optional and can be turned off in your phone's settings; the related feature just stops working.
- Don't send ratings or reports if you'd rather not; nothing is sent automatically.
- Because nothing we store is tied to you, there's no account to delete. Email us if you have questions about anything you sent.
Children
The app isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date above. Questions: hello@heaton.photography or the Golden Odds support page.
