Learn Landscape Photography

Everything here is stuff I actually use, explained the way I wish someone had explained it to me instead of handing me a manual the size of a phone book. No gatekeeping, no gear-snob nonsense — just the handful of ideas that actually change your photos.

The Exposure Triangle

Every photo you've ever taken is a negotiation between three settings: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. That's it. That's the whole triangle. Camera companies would love for you to think there are forty more things to master before you're "ready," but it's these three, fighting each other for how much light hits the sensor.

Widen the aperture, more light gets in, but your depth of field gets shallower. Slow the shutter down, more light gets in, but anything moving turns to blur. Raise the ISO, the sensor gets more sensitive, but so does the digital noise. You're always trading one for the others. Once that clicks, everything else in this guide is just detail.

Move one corner, the other two have to answer for it. That's the whole game.

Aperture and Depth of Field

Aperture is the hole in your lens that light passes through, measured in f-stops — and yes, the numbers are backwards from what feels intuitive. A small number like f/2.8 is a wide opening. A big number like f/16 is a narrow one. I still have to think about this every single time, ten years in.

The opening size controls depth of field — how much of the scene, front to back, looks sharp. For landscapes, I'm almost always shooting somewhere between f/8 and f/13. Wide enough that I'm not fighting diffraction softness, narrow enough that the wildflowers six feet away and the peak six miles away are both in focus. Think of the classic Maroon Bells shot from the lake shore — that only works because everything from the reflection at your boots to the summit ridge is rendered sharp at the same time. If I'm shooting a single flower or an animal and want the background to melt away, that's when I'll open up to f/2.8 or f/4 instead.

Big hole, lots of light, thin depth of field. Great for isolating a subject, risky for a whole mountain range.

Small hole, less light, everything from the flowers at your feet to the peak stays sharp.

Here's the same idea in the field: a deer standing in front of the Maroon Bells. At f/2.8 the deer is the whole story and the peaks behind it turn to soft color. At f/16, the deer and the mountains behind it are equally sharp — nothing pulls your eye more than anything else.

Shutter Speed — Where the Fun Is

Shutter speed is how long the sensor stays open, and it's the setting that actually changes the mood of a photo, not just the exposure. This is the one I'd tell a beginner to play with first.

Take a spot like Boulder Falls, Crystal Mill near Marble, or Hanging Lake out in Glenwood Canyon. Shoot the water at 1/1000s and you freeze every droplet — it looks powerful, almost violent, like the water is caught mid-argument with the rock. Drop down to 1 or 2 seconds on a tripod and that same water turns into ribbon — soft, silky, the classic "moody waterfall" look you've seen a thousand times on Instagram (there's a reason it's everywhere — it works, and it's exactly why every photo of Crystal Mill's old wooden powerhouse has that dreamy blur running underneath it). Same waterfall, same day, completely different photograph, and the only thing that changed was how long the shutter stayed open.

For that slow-shutter water look you'll need three things: a tripod, an overcast or low-light moment (bright midday sun makes a 2-second exposure nearly impossible without blowing out the highlights), and usually a neutral density filter to cut the light down further. I run a Kase magnetic filter system for exactly this reason — clip it on, drop the shutter speed, done.

ISO — Your Last Resort, Not Your First

ISO is how sensitive the sensor is to the light it's getting. Low ISO (100, 200) gives you clean, sharp detail. Push it up to 3200 or 6400 for a dark scene — say, shooting the Milky Way over Loveland Pass, or from a tent at 12,000 feet on a 14er summit push — and you'll start seeing grain, or "noise," creep into the shadows.

My rule of thumb: get the exposure right with aperture and shutter speed first, and only raise ISO to cover whatever gap is left. For daytime landscapes on a tripod, I'm at ISO 100, full stop, no exceptions. For astrophotography, I'll let it climb to 3200–6400 because a grainy photo of the Milky Way still beats a clean photo of pure darkness.

Golden Hour and Blue Hour — Why Timing Beats Everything

Golden hour is the hour or so after sunrise and before sunset, when the sun is low enough that its light travels through more atmosphere and comes out warm, soft, and directional instead of the flat white glare of noon. Blue hour is the window just before sunrise and just after sunset, when the sun is below the horizon but the sky still holds a deep, even blue. Both exist because of the same thing: a low sun angle. Both are why "good light" photos almost never happen between 10am and 4pm.

In Colorado this is doubly true because of the mountains. At golden hour the peaks catch a pink-orange glow called alpenglow, which is basically the whole reason sunrise shooters set alarms for 4:30am to be standing at a Rocky Mountain National Park overlook or the shore of Dream Lake before the sun is even up. Blue hour, on the other hand, is when city and long-exposure shots come alive — Denver's skyline or Union Station lit up against a deep blue sky is a blue hour shot, not a golden hour one.

My actual routine: check sunrise time, be at the trailhead with enough headlamp-lit hiking time to arrive 20 minutes before sunrise (that's blue hour, and it's often better than the sunrise itself), then keep shooting through the full hour after as the light turns gold. Apps that show you the sun's exact position and golden/blue hour times for your location and date make this dead simple to plan around.

ND and Graduated ND Filters — Buying Yourself More Time

A neutral density (ND) filter is just sunglasses for your lens — it cuts the light hitting the sensor without changing color, which lets you use a slower shutter speed than the available light would otherwise allow. Without one, shooting a silky waterfall shot at Crystal Mill or Boulder Falls at 2pm on a bright day is basically impossible — even at f/16 and ISO 100, a 1-2 second exposure would be completely blown out. Drop in a 6-stop or 10-stop ND and suddenly that same slow shutter speed is usable again.

A graduated ND (GND) filter is dark on one half and clear on the other, with a soft transition in the middle. It's built for scenes where the sky is much brighter than the land — a sunrise over the Sawatch Range, for instance, where without a GND you're forced to choose between a properly exposed sky and a black silhouette of the mountains, or a properly exposed foreground and a completely washed-out sky. Slide the dark half over the sky and both halves come out balanced.

I run a Kase magnetic filter system for both — the magnetic mount means I can pop a filter on or off in a few seconds instead of screwing and unscrewing rings with cold fingers at 6am, which matters more than it sounds like it should when the light is changing by the minute.

Lenses — What Each Type Actually Buys You

It's easy to think you need a bag full of glass. In practice, each lens type solves one specific problem, and most landscape work only touches two or three of them:

My favorite example of that last one: I bring my vintage Helios 44-2 out to the Denver Botanic Gardens specifically for the bokeh. Shot wide open, a vintage lens like that renders out-of-focus background light as a swirly, almost painterly blur that no modern macro lens gives you on purpose — it turns a fairly ordinary flower bed into something that looks nothing like a straightforward garden photo. Modern glass is technically "better" by every measurable spec, and I'd still rather have the old glass in my bag for that one specific look.

A Cheat Sheet for Colorado Conditions

These are starting points, not laws of physics — every scene is different, and half of photography is just chimping the back of your camera and adjusting. But if you want somewhere to start:

Composition Beats Gear, Every Time

I could hand you my camera at Garden of the Gods and you could hand me your phone, and I'd still bet on composition mattering more than the equipment. A few things I actually think about on every hike:
