  • Brainard Lake Recreation Area — A high-elevation recreation area above Ward that serves as the gateway to some of the Indian Peaks Wilderness's best-known lakes, including Lake Isabelle and Long Lake, with the jagged Indian Peaks themselves as a backdrop throughout. The access road closes seasonally from mid-October to mid-June, so a winter visit means an extra few miles on foot from the gate — worth it for a much quieter version of a trail that gets crowded in summer.
