  • Crystal Mill, Marble — An 1892 wooden powerhouse perched on a rock outcropping above the Crystal River, one of the most recognizable and most photographed structures in Colorado. The mill itself sits on private property, so shots are taken from the road or riverbank across from it — first light is worth the early start here, since midday sun flattens the wood siding and the surrounding cliffs lose their texture entirely.
  • Marble, CO (Crystal River valley) — A small former quarry town along the Crystal River, best known today as the jumping-off point for the road to Crystal Mill, with the river itself running clear and fast enough for long-exposure water shots right in town. The valley's aspen groves turn early relative to higher-elevation spots nearby, so it's worth checking here first if you're timing a fall color trip through the area.
  • Crystal, CO (townsite) — A near-ghost town a few miles up the road from Crystal Mill, with only a handful of remaining structures and year-round residents despite having no grid electricity even today. Weathered, abandoned buildings against the Elk Mountains make for a different subject than the Mill itself, and far fewer people make the extra push up the 4WD road to see them.
