  • McClure Pass — An 8,755-foot pass on Highway 133 between the Crystal River valley and Paonia, part of the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway. The road climbs through huge, unbroken aspen groves on both sides, which makes it one of the best fall drives in the state, usually peaking from late September into early October. Redstone and Marble are just down the road on the Crystal River side, so it pairs well with a day around the Crystal Mill. For road shots, find a safe pullout on a curve and get low to the pavement so the center line leads into the color, and keep an eye on traffic. Morning keeps the hillsides in softer light before the midday sun flattens the gold.
