• Gothic (East River / Crested Butte) — The East River winds through open meadowland north of Crested Butte, with Gothic Mountain's distinctive spires rising directly behind it — the wildflower displays here in July are some of the best in the entire Elk Mountains. Shoot low with a wide lens to get the river's curve leading into the peaks, or come back in September when the willows along the banks turn a deep red-orange against the first snow on the high peaks.
• Emerald Lake (Crested Butte) — A short, easy hike to emerald-colored water, ringed by pine and wildflower-covered hillsides. It's close enough to town for a half-day trip, and a good spot to bring a paddleboard or just hang a hammock and stay a while — the water's color is most saturated under direct midday sun, which is the rare case where you don't want to wait for golden hour.
