Collegiate Peaks (Buena Vista)

About Collegiate Peaks
A chain of fourteeners in the Sawatch Range named for universities, including Mount Harvard, Mount Columbia, Mount Yale, Mount Princeton and Mount Oxford, rising above the Arkansas Valley west of Buena Vista. You do not have to climb one to photograph them: the valley floor and the roads east of town give a full view of the range, especially after fresh snow. Winter is a great time, when the peaks are bright white above the dark pinon and juniper of the valley, and windy days bring fast clouds to stretch with a long exposure. The range faces east, so sunrise lights the summits first. Buena Vista makes a good base, with hot springs and the Arkansas River close by.
