Colorado Wildflower Season: Where and When to Go
By Chris Heaton · access details checked October 2026

Wildflower season in Colorado climbs the mountains with the summer. It starts in the foothills in late spring and finishes in the alpine basins in August, so there's almost always something blooming somewhere. Crested Butte calls itself the state's wildflower capital, and in a good year it earns it.
When the wildflowers bloom
Bloom moves uphill, roughly 3 to 5 days later for every 1,000 feet you climb, and a big snow year pushes everything later.
- Late May–June: foothills and lower valleys; balsamroot and lupine around Silverthorne and the Front Range.
- Early to mid-July: subalpine meadows like Crested Butte, Rustler's Gulch and the Maroon Bells.
- Mid-July to early August: alpine basins like Yankee Boy, American Basin, Ice Lakes and Shrine Pass.
- Late July to mid-August: the highest tundra along Trail Ridge Road and Mount Blue Sky.

The best wildflower spots
- Crested Butte: Washington Gulch, Rustler's Gulch and Paradise Divide.
- Shrine Pass near Vail: easy access and big views of the Gore and Holy Cross.
- Yankee Boy and Governor Basins near Ouray: columbines and waterfalls on 4x4 roads.
- American Basin near Lake City: one of the most famous alpine meadows in the state.
- Herman Gulch and Guanella Pass: the closest good wildflower hikes to Denver.

How to photograph wildflowers
Get low and get close. A wide-angle lens a foot from the flowers makes a meadow feel endless and puts the peaks behind them. Shoot early: the light is warm, the wind is usually calm, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July. For a single bloom, a longer lens and a wide aperture blur the background into color.
- Stay on the trail; one footprint can damage alpine plants for years.
- Use focus stacking for sharp flowers and sharp mountains together.
- Afternoon storms build fast in July. Start early and be off ridges by noon.
